This year has brought uncertainty to the Family Learning Institute and the community we serve, yet our commitment to helping children build strong literacy skills has never wavered. We are profoundly grateful for the generosity that makes this work possible—and for the continued encouragement and support we receive from you.

Our Students and Volunteers Are Back!

We’re excited to share that the 2025–26 school year is officially underway! Our staff and dedicated volunteers spent the summer preparing to welcome a full roster of students—both at our main site on South Industrial and at our outreach sites across Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

To kick things off, tutors participated in FLI’s yearly tutor training sessions, led by our staff and teaching specialists, to ensure they’re equipped with the tools and strategies that help students thrive. We’re especially proud that all eligible students from last year—except those moving on to 6th grade—are returning.

Only with your support will these students continue receiving essential one-on-one reading and writing tutoring through building skills, confidence, and a foundation for lifelong success.

Volunteer Spotlight: Library Heroes at Work

Meet two of the Family Learning Institute’s dedicated volunteers:
Joy Janiszewski and Marsha Sage, who have gone above and beyond over the past several months. In addition to tutoring students, they are organizing, labeling, and leveling the books in our library and have even taken on the extraordinary task of creating a comprehensive database for our library’s nearly 10,000 books. Thanks to their commitment, our students and tutors have easier access to the right books at the right time—making learning more engaging and effective than ever!

In today’s funding climate, it is harder than ever for nonprofits like the FLI to secure the resources needed to sustain our work. But we know one thing for certain: literacy cannot wait. Our proven track record shows that with one-on-one support, children who are struggling can catch up,
