FLI tutoring school-year is October thru May
FLI Reading Tutors volunteer once a week for one hour. Reading Tutors work one-to-one with an assigned student during the entire school year. All volunteers that work with youth are required to participate in an annual background check. There are additional weekly opportunities to work with small groups of students on other academic topics, such as writing, math, and educational games. FLI tutor training takes place several times each year.
FLI Summer tutoring sessions are from late June thru mid-August
Summer Playground Programs are in collaboration with Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation and other local resources. FLI provides academic enrichment services for students in Ypsilanti.
The FLI summer focus is to prevent summer learning loss.
“Studies have shown that if students are able to participate in organized academic activities during the summer months, they are less likely to experience the losses in academic skills and knowledge before the start of the next school year.” Source: Maríñez-Lora, Ané M; Quintana, Stephen M. (2010). “Summer Learning Loss”.

Substitute Tutors
Substitute tutors participate in the same FLI tutor training. Substitutes are usually unable to commit to a fixed schedule for a complete school year. Substitutes volunteer when they are available. Some people are also
“on-call” in case another tutor cancels.
Substitute tutors are an extremely valuable resource at FLI!
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Beyond direct tutoring services, FLI Volunteers have contributed clerical work, information technology, fundraising & event assistance, Adult Spelling Bee participants, public relations, and many other services. Many of the FLI board members and staff started out as volunteers!
