Literacy Saves Lives

YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO IMPACT THE LIFE OF A CHILD

What We Do At Family Learning Institute

Family Learning Institute has one of the strongest programs in helping our economically disadvantaged kids get to grade-level literacy (2 – 5 grade). We have had phenomenal success, not only during the school year, but also through our summer programs, where we have helped hundreds of kids retain their literacy skills, both in reading and writing.

Virtual Tutoring

Virtual Reading Tutors volunteer once a week for one hour. Reading Tutors work one-to-one with an assigned student during the entire school year. All volunteers that work with youth are required to participate in an annual background check. There are additional weekly opportunities to work with small groups of students on other academic topics, such as writing, math, and educational games. FLI tutor training takes place several times each year.

In-person Tutoring

In-person Reading Tutors volunteer, when we start this service again due to Covid-19 restrictions, tutor once a week for one hour. Reading Tutors work one-to-one with an assigned student during the entire school year.  There are additional weekly opportunities to work with small groups of students on other academic topics, such as writing, math, and educational games. FLI tutor training takes place several times each year.

Summer & Outreach Program

Our outreach program is the same as our in person program that takes place at various after school locations. Our summer Playground Programs are in collaboration with Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation and other local resources. FLI provides academic enrichment services for students in Ypsilanti. The FLI summer focus is to prevent summer learning loss.
