The Family Learning Institute will host Annual Spelling Bee to support tutoring programs
Ann Arbor, January 15, 2019— The Family Learning Institute (FLI), will hold its Annual Spelling Bee on Friday March 8, 2019, at Washtenaw Community College, Morris Lawrence Building, 4700 East Huron River Drive, Ypsilanti. FLI invites you to join us for an evening of enthralling etymology and spellbinding suspense. Laughter is part of the fun and excitement as the friendly competitors test their mettle against rival teams.
A silent auction and wine pull begin at 6:00 PM; the Spelling Bee begins at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at FLI’s website (familylearninginstitute.org). Funds raised will enable FLI to expand tutoring, outreach, and summer enrichment programs. Last year, with the support of community sponsors, FLI attracted an enthusiastic audience of over 110 guests who helped us in raising $30,000 to support FLI’s tutoring programs.
The Family Learning Institute provides free reading tutoring for 2ndto 5hgraders who come from economically challenged families and struggle in school. FLI’s small staff of educational specialists provide training for volunteers, tutors offerone-to-one literacy coaching at three Ann Arbor elementary schools and community locations in Ypsilanti.
Only 30 percent* of the Washtenaw County 3rd grade students from economically challenged families read at grade level, compared to 68 percent of their non-economically challenged counterparts. FLI is a volunteer tutoring non-profit who partner volunteer tutors with 2nd through 5th grade students from economically challenged families who are a year or more behind in reading. FLI students have the same tutor during the school year and then meet at least once a week, for an hour of one-to-one tutoring. Eighty-five percent of our students improve at least one grade level. “Our program has helped many students. We know that there are many more students in the area who are eligible for and could benefit from FLI’s services.” says Sharine Buddin, Executive Director of the Family Learning Institute.
FLI was founded in 1999. The Family Learning Institute is a volunteer-based nonprofit agency dedicated to closing the achievement gap in Washtenaw County. We provide free tutoring in reading for students in grades 2-5 who are from economically challenged families and are struggling in school.
